Fuel costlier than carbon tax, says Qantas chief

July 28th, 2011

AUBJ – July 27 –Escalating fuel price will have a greater impact on air travel than the Federal Government’s planned carbon tax, claimed Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce.

Qantas has repeatedly said that it plans to pass the cost of the carbon tax onto customers, but the firm was adamant that rising fuel costs would have more of an impact on the company’s profits.

“If you ask me what I’m worried about, I’m more worried about fuel price than I would be about carbon price,” Joyce said.

“The rise of fuel prices greatly outweighs [the cost of the carbon tax],” said Joyce. “Our fuel bill this year will be $4.6 billion.”
